Global Tracker Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)

The Tracker Technologies AVL system Global Tracker finds application in all dispatch operations ie. law enforcement, defense, mining and transport sectors - anywhere there is a need for effective deployment of vehicles. Such vehicles may be tractor/trailer units, trains, vessels and aircraft. Global Tracker provides a centralized real-time window of vehicle location and status. This information integrates the control of vehicles by enabling the dispatcher to identify the position of a vehicle, the current direction of travel, and the current vehicle status. Text messages can be passed between the control center and the vehicle.

  1. Quicker Response

    Through voice communications, dispatchers have a general idea of vehicle location. As the number of vehicles under control of the dispatcher and the need to direct vehicles quickly increases, the situation faced by the dispatcher grows increasingly more complex. Often the dispatcher has to guess which vehicle can most quickly reach a, possibly life-threatening, target location. These guesses are based on the dispatchers' current knowledge of current vehicle locations, status, traffic conditions, etc. Global Tracker quickly removes this uncertainty, reducing errors by identifying vehicles closest to the desired target location and re-routing them along the shortest path to the target. Response times typically improve 20% as a result of implementing AVL.

  2. Improved Operations

    Through observation and experience, excellent routes can be chosen for each vehicle and time of day. However if routes or driving conditions change, it takes time to perfect the routes again. Global Tracker is able to process route requirements and conditions, identify discrepancies and suggest alternatives. Optionally it is able to display the location of vehicles in real-time on an electronic map. This map can be displayed on a computer screen or projected onto a white wall, providing all dispatchers with information on all vehicles. Vehicle and target locations are displayed as icons, which can be configured with different colors and/or shapes to represent different types of vehicle and/or their status. Global Tracker aids dispatchers in re-orienting lost drivers or suggesting optimal routes which decrease driving distances and driving time. In the case of vehicle breakdown or other emergency, the drivers can alert the central station for help. With immediate and accurate knowledge of the vehicle location, help can arrive quickly. System logs can provide reports for later auditing, analysis or simulated training.

    Global Tracker's graphical display of an entire fleet provides a rapid situational awareness. This improves the co-operation and co-ordination of many dispatchers, smoothing hand-over and improving the awareness of an unfolding situation. With Global Tracker, dispatchers readily visualize where company vehicles are located and be assured that their drivers are making correct decisions. This task is performed instead of otherwise constant, and distracting, dispatcher-driver radio voice traffic.

    Optional mobile messaging enables drivers to receive on-screen instructions, unambiguous track warrants, or control center advice. These can be stored and viewed when required. Such automation leads to fair driver treatment.

    Vehicle assets can be more effectively deployed with Global Tracker AVL. The fleet is used more productively; total fleet mileage is reduced, there are fewer responding vehicles, lower fuel costs, reduced cost of maintenance costs, all improving the contribution to bottom-line profit.     Global Tracker also can provide a useful interface to inventory management and billing systems to automatically track and bill chargeable time.


For maximum flexibility Global Tracker is comprised of four segments

  1. Mobile segment,
  2. Telecommunications segment,
  3. Control segment, and
  4. Host segment.

AVL Segments

Flexibility ensures each of these segments can be supplied by Tracker Technologies, or use existing system components already in place.

The Control segment manages the telecommunications between the Host and Remotes and normally resides at the control center. Its function is to ensure the smooth and transparent working of the system without excessive operator attention.

The Host segment, centralized at a control center, allows operators at local or distant workstations to monitor and direct vehicles. It collects statistics and provides fleet visibility via icons on an electronic map.

The Mobile segment is a Remote installed in each monitored vehicle, and connected to a radio transceiver. It has control inputs for monitoring vehicle or payload health and control outputs for remotely activating the vehicle systems. Optionally it may include a Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) for text messaging

The Telecommunications segment, a wireless link, can either be private, or public, or a combination of both depending on the desired characteristics of the system, such as coverage area, cost and availability.

Host System

Located at a control center, the Host System runs on one or more networked PCs using Windows and application software for fleet monitoring and assignment.

Network Controller

The Network Controller is the gateway between the radio system and the operator displays. It receives transmissions from the Remotes and converts them to the display terminal protocols. As well transmitting operator messages and commands to Remotes, it arbitrates the assignment of Remote transmission slots. With DGPS, the location of a moving vehicle can be resolved to within 5 meters. Optional items include the Verazity DGPS Receiver and associated antenna, Radio Packet Data Modem, and a VHF/UHF radio with associated antenna at an elevated location.
